A Membership
Ever wondered the difference between your membership in the IBEW?
There are two types of memberships with the IBEW – “A” and “BA”. “BA” members typically work for a single employer with negotiated pensions and benefits. As an employee of NB Power, when you sign up for membership you are automatically in the “BA” category. “A” membership, on the other hand, is open to all, especially those in construction or maintenance, including IBEW international officers. They pay for and participate in the IBEW pension and death benefit funds.
Curious about switching to an “A” membership? It’s encouraged as it offers additional pension and death benefits. Switching is simple – just reach out to the Local 37 office to learn how!
Here’s what you need to know when switching:
- Notify your Local Union
- Annual dues for “A” membership are due in January. These dues include pension and death benefits, currently at $252 a year or $21 a month, payable in advance. Payment methods include credit card, e-transfer, or cheque.
- Ensure dues are paid up, even during periods of leave, to keep membership current.
- At 65, you can apply for your pension through the International Office.
- Pension calculation: $4.50 x (Years of “A” Membership) up to 2022 and $5.50 x (Years of “A” Membership) after 2023. For example: if you were an “A” member for 10 years until 2022 and 2 years after 2023 you’d get ($4.50 X 10 years) + ($5.50 x 2 years) = $56 a month.
- To qualify for pension, you need at least 5 years of membership prior to retirement age of 65, with early retirement possible at 62 with 20 years of membership (with a reduced pension).
